Welcome to this online workshop on BULLY, a film by Lee Hirsch. BULLY provides a compelling and tragic portrait of the consequences of bullying in our society. This workshop and the accompanying guide are designed to help you process your own reactions to the film and prepare to use it effectively with your students.
If you have the opportunity to view the film before participating in this workshop, your experience will be enhanced. However, we have included clips from the film throughout the workshop to help you experience its power and potential. Please make sure you view all the video clips.
We are deeply committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning community with all of you. While we won’t be in the same room with you, we will make every effort to respond to your questions and help generate useful conversations online among all participants. Learn more about the facilitators and the work they do for Facing History.
How to Participate in This Workshop
Whether you are simply browsing the information in this workshop or plan to participate actively in the online discussion, you will want to go through the sections in the order they are presented:
- The first section provides some examples of bullying in order to develop a shared definition of what constitutes bullying and to consider its impact.
- The next section outlines how to prepare yourself, your classroom, and your students before and after seeing the film.
- And finally, the third section delves more deeply into what schools can do to create a safe and reflective learning environment for all students.
In addition to participating in this workshop, we encourage you to keep a journal, where you can reflect on the readings, videos, and discussions included here and in the accompanying guide as you prepare to use this film. Please also take a moment once you have participated in the workshop to fill out a brief evaluation of your experience.
